A radiator cover still has to let the heat out

Radiators in NYC buildings are often loud to look at, hot to touch and placed right under the best window. A cover hides them, but a closed box traps the heat. His custom radiator covers use vented fronts so warm air still reaches the room, and the top becomes a shelf for plants or books, or even a seat.

Radiators also need service, and valves need to be reached. Lauro plans every cover with that in mind, so the radiator and its valve are not sealed away. Where there’s no radiator, a built-in window seat makes the most of a deep sill or a bay: a cushioned spot to sit, drawers or lift-up storage below, and shelves on the sides if you want them.

Good to know before we start.

Will a radiator cover block the heat?

Not if it’s built right. The fronts are vented so warm air keeps moving into the room. Lauro measures the radiator and the window before he draws the cover.

Can I still get to the radiator?

That’s part of the plan. At the free measurement Lauro looks at the radiator and its valve and draws the cover so they can still be reached.

Can a window seat have storage?

Yes. Window seats with storage underneath are one of the pieces he builds, including seats in bay windows and seats between bookcases.

Painted or wood?

Both. His photos show white painted covers and oak ones. You can also choose maple, cherry, walnut or MDF.
