Pieces you can’t buy in a store

Some things only work when they’re built for the spot. A banquette has to fit the corner of your kitchen to the inch, and the table has to match it. Wainscoting has to follow the stairs. Custom millwork is about those fits, and Lauro measures, draws and builds each piece himself, in his shop in Glendale, Queens.

He also builds freestanding furniture: platform beds, solid oak and painted dressers, home office desks and dining tables, including a live-edge table. Each one is drawn by hand first, so you see the size, the wood and the details before he starts. Drawers are fitted in the shop and run on full-extension slides where it makes sense.
